We’ve taken some time to have our experts answer your most common questions regarding the BionX system, its usage, and its many benefits.
-
What is the BionX system?
- BionX is an Intelligent Mobility system that provides power-assistance proportional to the rider's effort. Therefore, you remain in control and can request power-assistance from the motor only when necessary, according to the energy level you require and distance you wish to cover. With BionX, your bike remains a bike and riding remains a sport.
-
On what wheel size can it be installed?
- The BionX system can be installed on 20”, 24”, 26” and 700 c wheel size, with standard 135mm drop-out. Disc brake compatible
-
What distance can you ride in support mode?
- It varies depending on road conditions, riding surface, cyclist weight and assistance need. For details, please see How To Choose
-
For whom did you design the assist system?
-
Our system was designed for people who wish to increase their riding experience, and:
- find it difficult to ride uphill or against the wind
- want a good workout (4 regenerative settings)
- want to ride faster and longer
- want to avoid traffic when traveling to work
- want to ride with a group and maintain their speed (without struggling at the back of the pack
-
Will an assisted bicycle keep me in better shape than a conventional bicycle?
-
Yes. According to an Australian study conducted by the Institute of Transport Studies, the assistance provided by such a bicycle helps to maintain the rider’s heart rate in the aerobic zone.
Because you can be assisted when going uphill, you do not need to spend excessive energy, you feel less tired, and can therefore keep going in your aerobic zone. With a conventional bicycle, many people exceed their aerobic zone when riding uphill then feels completely drained.
-
How does the BionX system work?
-
You can use your BionX powered bicycle like any other bicycle. When you feel the need to get assistance, you can simply activate the controller. The system will then boost your thrusting power from 25% up to 300% of your effort.
Since the BionX system is equipped with a battery charge indicator, you can manage the energy required to travel the desired distance without worrying about running out of energy on the return trip.
-
How do I recharge the BionX battery?
-
Our system includes a BionX authorized charger which can be plugged into any ordinary power outlet. At any given time you can see the state of the battery ie. if it is being recharged or if the battery is full. The battery can be removed from the bicycle to be recharged.
Once removed, the battery must be stored in a dry, well ventilated area at room temperature.
You can also partially recharge the battery when riding and improve your range, by simply using the 4 levels of regenerative mode or the right hand brake equipped with a sensor switching the motor into generative mode.
-
Do I need to completely drain the battery before recharging it?
- No. It is not necessary to completely drain the battery as LiMn batteries have no memory. The battery can be recharged at any time, as a result your battery can always be at full capacity for your next ride.
-
Can I recharge my battery when riding my bicycle?
- Yes. By simply putting the system in the regenerative mode, the battery will automatically recharge. The system is also automatically setting itself into a regenerative mode and recharges the battery when braking.
-
Can I use the BionX system when riding in the rain?
- Yes, you can use our system in the rain without any worries. All system elements are sealed and water resistant.
-
Do you provide a system warranty?
- Yes, we provide the best warranty in the market. This warranty covers the motor and control console and components for 2 years. The battery has a one-year warranty against any manufacturer’s defects in material or workmanship.
-
Where is the BionX system manufactured?
- The BionX system was created and has been manufactured in Canada since 1998.
-
Is it easy to remove the rear wheel in case of a flat tire?
- Yes. By simply unplugging both connectors under the neoprene (near the rear wheel). The wheel can be removed just like with any ordinary bicycle.
-
Is it possible to install the motor on the front wheel?
- Yes, but without the benefit of having proportional assistance since there is no chain going to the wheel and no possibility to activate the torque sensor. A front motor would only be operated with throttle.
